Description
The Master of Science in Computer & Information Systems (MS CIS) with a major in Software Management produces effective leaders for advanced technology organizations. It offers the most up-to-date, industry-based knowledge of best practices in IT process development, leadership, program management and software assurance. It provides a seamlessly integrated strategic understanding of the correct way to manage life cycle processes, software assurance processes, security and privacy.
Graduates will be able to interact and function effectively in a multi-national, multi-tiered project environment. In addition, they will be able to ensure that their organizations will be able to compete successfully within today's global environment.
Specific knowledge areas include IT portfolio and project management, system requirements elicitation and specification, comprehensive program construction concepts, assurance and business alignment processes and audit and control. Upon graduation, students will be able to create and oversee productive and continuously improving management control infrastructures for large, complex and diverse businesses.

Admission Requirements
The Master of Science in Computer & Information Systems with a major in Software Management program is open to students of high academic promise who have earned a four-year baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Of primary importance are the nature and quality of the applicant's prior academic record and work experience. No prior work in software management is necessary since the curriculum encapsulates the entire body of knowledge. Incoming students with limited background in software development may be required to complete the foundational course to ensure the student is prepared to meet the requirements of the degree: CIS 1010 Foundations of Cybersecurity.

Degree Requirements
A student must complete 30 credit hours, which are comprised of five core courses and five electives.

STEM/OPT Program – International Students
Detroit Mercy's Master of Science in Computer & Information Systems is a qualified STEM program by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. By graduating from Detroit Mercy, students admitted starting fall 2020 and completing the program will be eligible for paid temporary work authorization in the United States via the OPT program.
The STEM/OPT extension is a 24-month period of temporary training that directly relates to an F-1 student's program of study in an approved STEM field. Optional Practical Training (OPT) is an opportunity for students studying in the United States with an F-1 visa to apply what they’ve learned in the real-world and count it towards valuable work experience. Certain F-1 students who receive STEM degrees may apply for up to a 24-month extension of their OPT. All F and M students that study in the United States need a Form I-20.
