  • Constitution Day conversation, Sept. 17, on 鈥淔reedom of Speech and the Constitution鈥

    Thursday September 12, 2024

The Black Abolitionist Archive, along with the Departments of History and Political Science and the McNichols Campus Library, invite Detroit Mercy students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to join us for our annual Constitution Day event on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at noon.

The event will be held in the Bargman Room, located on the second floor of the McNichols Campus Library. A limited number of light lunches will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and all are welcome.

This year鈥檚 theme is 鈥淔reedom of Speech and the Constitution鈥 and features a presentation and conversation with Professor of History Roy Finkenbine and Assistant Professor of Political Science Lee Dionne.

September 17 is officially Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, so designated by a joint resolution of the United States Congress to commemorate the 1787 signing of the United States Constitution on that date. Each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program on Constitution Day about the United States Constitution for its students.

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects, among other freedoms, the freedom of speech and states that Congress cannot make laws that limit freedom of speech. This means that the government generally cannot punish people or organizations for what they say or write, unless in exceptional circumstances, and Constitution Day is a day to celebrate the document that protects these rights.

Please join us for what will most likely be a spirited conversation!

  • Students to discuss today鈥檚 most pressing issues at Ethics Bowl on Oct. 11

    Thursday September 12, 2024

Detroit Mercy’s 21st annual Ethics Bowl for all undergraduate students will be held on Friday, Oct. 11, from 12-4 p.m. The Ethics Bowl is a competition inspired by TV’s College Bowl, but modified rules adapt the game to the subject of ethics. The competition is a campus-wide event at the University, which involves students, staff, alumni, faculty and administrators alike.

At the Ethics Bowl, a moderator poses questions to teams of three to five students. Questions may address ethical dilemmas regarding:

    • Classroom topics (e.g., cheating or plagiarism)
    • Personal matters (e.g., dating or friendship)
    • Professional ethics (e.g., in engineering, law, medicine)
    • Social and political issues (e.g., free speech, gun control, etc.)

Many students are surprised at how much they enjoy Ethics Bowl and often enthusiastically return to compete in subsequent years. Judges and moderators are drawn from faculty, staff, administration and alumni, many of whom return every year as well. A panel of judges rates answers in terms of intelligibility, focus, depth and judgment. No specialized knowledge in ethical theory is required to compete in or judge an Ethics Bowl.

In addition, the first-place team has the honor of representing 香港六合彩开奖 at a regional Ethics Bowl and may go on to compete in the national , which takes place at the annual meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics in February.

For more information or to sign up to be a judge, contact Professor Martin G. Leever at 313-993-1135 or ethicsbowl@udmercy.edu听or checkout the .
