Undergraduate Catalog 2017-2018

Five-Year BS-MS Program in Chemistry (BS-MS)

Description

The College of Engineering & Science offers a combined Bachelor of Science/Master of Science program in Chemistry.

In order to complete both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in five years, the student must (a) be very well prepared as an incoming freshman and (b) satisfy all the admission criteria (see below) at the end of the junior year, in order to take graduate-level courses while still an undergraduate.

Program Information

  • Students must complete 126 credit hours for the undergraduate B.S. degree, plus and additional 30 credit hours for the M.S. degree. For the curriculum of each see the catalog descriptions for the B.S. degree in Chemistry and the MS degree in Chemistry.
  • Students with a GPA of 3.25 and 95 credit hours should apply for the program near the end of their third year or in the beginning of their fourth year.
  • If accepted into the program, students may take up to 3 graduate credits in their fourth year that will count towards the graduate requirements.
  • In their fifth year, students will be registered as full-time graduate students, which requires that they are registered for at least 9 credit hours of graduate-level courses per term. These courses will be charged at the graduate tuition rate.

Financial Aid

  • Students accepted into the 5-year program must check with their financial aid advisor regarding details of their available aid.
  • Detroit Mercy undergraduate scholarships continue in the fifth year.
  • Departmental scholarship / teaching assistantships may be available from the department.

Degree Requirements

The B.S. degree program in Chemistry requires 126 credits of coursework. It is designed to be completed by a full-time student in four academic years. The 30-credit M.S. degree program in Chemistry may take two academic years to complete - dependent upon the academic performance and preparation of the B.S.. degree holder, e.g. how well he/she satisfies the prerequisites for admission to graduate school at Detroit Mercy. However, the requirements of the two degree programs can be accomplished by our best students over a period of five years, instead of six years.

The course requirements for the B.S. + M.S. program will total to 156 credits. They are based on the current existing requirements for each program separately.

A Chemistry major must have achieved the following in (approximately) three years of study toward the B.S. degree at Detroit Mercy in order to be admitted to the combined program:

  • Completion of at least 95 credits of coursework.
  • A QPA of at least 3.25 overall and a 3.00 in Chemistry courses.

Degree Requirements (BS 126 credits + MS 30 credits, 3 credits double-counted)

The course requirements for the 5-Year Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry to Master of Science with a major in Chemistry include 126 credits of undergraduate course work and 30 credits of graduate coursework. Nine credits taken at the graduate-level will be double-counted towards the undergraduate degree, so that the total credits completed will be 153 credits. The course requirements are based on the current existing requirements for each program separately. Please review separate catalog pages for Bachelor in Civil Engineering and Master in Civil Engineering for degree requirements.
